Marcelo Barbero is considered one of the greatest Spanish guitar makers of the 20th century. He began his training in the workshop of José Ramirez I and later worked for José Ramirez II. His guitars were of extremely high quality. After the death of Santos Hernandez in 1943, Marcelo was hired by Santos' widow to complete the instruments left unfinished by Santos. His legend grew after flamenco king Sabicas used his guitars in the 1950s.
